Hervey Bay on Queensland's Fraser Coast could be the ideal location for your next holiday. Hervey Bay is located just three hours drive north of Brisbane and is the major jumping off point to visit Fraser Island. Hervey Bay also has its own domestic airport with daily flights from Sydney through Qantas, Jet Star and Virgin Blue. Qantas link flights are also available from Brisbane. Hervey Bay also has regular coach services from both the north and the south. This region has been emerging as a major international destination as the tourism public becomes more aware of the majestic attractions on Fraser Island and Hervey Bay's growing reputation as the whale watching capital of the world.

Hervey Bay accommodation is mostly new. The recent real estate boom has seen the construction of many new resort style developments in the town. The Stella resorts group now has three properties in Hervey Bay. They are Breakfree Great Sandy Straits marina Resort, Mantra Hervey Bay and Peppers Pier Resort. Other new developments include The Bay Apartments and The Quarterdecks Resort. All are located in oceanfront locations. Hervey bay has some excellent restaurants and cafés and there is also a number of modern shopping plazas. In mid July every year migrating humpback whales start to visit the area. This visitation continues until early November and a large fleet of quality whale watching boats now services the tens of thousands of whale watchers who flock here every year to see them. The whale watching area is located in the lee of Fraser Island and is one of the few places in the world where you can see whales in relatively calm waters without the necessity of venturing onto the open ocean.

Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. It is most unusual in that rain forests and huge Satinay trees cover its interior. There are also pristine lakes with white sandy beaches that will take your breath away. Excellent Fraser Island accommodation and tours are available from Hervey Bay. It is possible to do a day tour or extended tours with overnight accommodation. There are no made roads on Fraser so you will need to hire a four wheel drive vehicle if you wish to drive yourself. We can organize this for you from Hervey bay. There are regular barge services from the mainland to ferry you and your vehicle to the island. A few days spent four wheel driving on Fraser Island will be one of the highlights of your Hervey Bay adventure.
