By Mick Gallagher, our Adelaide accommodation beat.
If you’re arriving in Adelaide in a car, particularly with a caravan, a roof rack or anything bigger than a Corolla, the city-centre hotels start to feel awkward fast. Comfort Inn & Suites Sombrero on Main North Road sits about 4km north of the CBD at Prospect — far enough out to park easily, close enough that you’re in town in 12 minutes on the bus or a 10-minute drive.
It’s a Choice-affiliated motel under the Comfort Inn brand, owner-operated, three stars, with the layout most Australians who grew up doing road trips will recognise instantly: ground-floor rooms opening to a carpark, an outdoor pool, a courtyard, kitchenettes in most rooms, and a small office where you collect your key. Reliable, unfussy, walkable to a decent local pizzeria, and a fraction of the price of the CBD hotels.
Who this place suits
- Road-trippers ending or starting a Barossa / Flinders / Yorke Peninsula loop — free on-site parking, no city-driving stress on departure morning
- Families who want a small kitchenette and a pool for the kids without paying CBD pricing
- Visitors to the northern suburbs — Northern Adelaide universities, hospitals, sporting fixtures at Coopers Stadium
- Adelaide weekend events — AFL at Adelaide Oval is a $20 Uber from here
The rooms
Rooms range from Standard Queen up to Deluxe Family Suites with two bedrooms. Most have kitchenettes (microwave, fridge, kettle, basic crockery) which makes a noticeable difference on a multi-night stay. Air-con, hairdryer, free WiFi, parking included. Bathrooms are showers (no baths in the standard tier).
The pool is sized for a family of four; not somewhere to do laps. The on-site cafe handles breakfast (continental and cooked options); for dinner walk 200m up Main North Road to the cluster of cafes and Italian places that the Prospect locals rate.
Getting into town and around
The CBD is 12 minutes by car. Bus 222/224 runs down Main North Road into the city every 10–15 minutes during the day and drops you at the Currie Street stops — about a 20-minute trip. Coming back, the same buses turn into Main North Road on the eastern side of King William Street; the motel is announced by name on Google Maps and most drivers know the stop.
For exploring further: Adelaide’s ring road is 5 minutes north, so the Barossa is 50 minutes (no city traffic to fight through), McLaren Vale 45 minutes south through the CBD, and the Adelaide Hills 30 minutes east. Drivers love the location for exactly this reason.
