South Island Skiing Information
The South Island ski fields are located right throughout the central mountain region of the island. Some are close to Christchurch and hanmer Springs, while others are near Queenstown and Wanaka. The South Island is the first place people think of when they are planning their New Zealand winter escape as you can choose from places such as Mount Hutt, Cardrona, Treble Cone, The Remarkables, Hanmer Springs and Nelsons.
Most people like to base themselves in Queenstown as you can take your pick from. Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, are Located just 20 minutes from Queenstown, Coronet Peak is great for all levels of skiers providing wide open spaced for beginners, and gullies and dips for the more serious skiers. You can also make full use of the licensed restaurant and bar on the mountain and with live music to keep you entertained, the whole family will love this location. The Remarkables are known to be great for the more avid skier with much more difficult terrain to contend with, providing some very challenging skiing terrain in New Zealand. With both skiing destination being so closely located to Queenstown there is no on-snow accommodation but within the nearby town you can pick and choose from a wide selection of fantastic accommodation.
Cardrona and Treble Cone are near Wanaka,in the Southern Lakes district in the South Island. Cardrona is an excellent family field with many activities for all ages, a great selection of restaurants to enjoy and special facilities for the little ones. With slopes that are just for beginners and intermediate skiers, snowboarding terrain and downhill slopes for the advances skiers everyone will thoroughly enjoy their time at Cardrona. Cardrona is also known as the home of New Zealand snowboarding mainly because it has always taken special care to cater for those on one plank. The New Zealand national snowboard championships are held there and there are four half pipes and a terrain park for boarders to utilise.
Treble Cone is yet another amazing skiing location that is located near Wanaka where you can not only experience world class skiing conditions but also be blown away with the breathtaking scenery that surrounds you. With the pristine lake in the foreground, beautiful islands in the background and perfect blue sky you will have an amazing time as you make your way down the powdery white mountains. Treble Cone is much like The Remarkable with the terrain being perfectly suited for the more advance skiers, but with keeping this in mind not many people venture to Treble Cone so you won’t have the crowds to contend with. With snowboarders completely taken of at Treble Cone with superpipes, quaterpipes, big kickers, 40+ rails, hits, jumps and more you can snowboard until your heart is content.
Mt Hutt, situated near Christchurch, is renowned for having the longest snow season in the country. It gets the first snow fall of the season and receives the last bit of snow fall at the end of the skiing season, so you can only imagine the popularity with the ski resort. Methven is the closest town to Mt Hutt where you find a great deal of accommodation, eateries and entertainment for you to enjoy, as there is no on the snow accommodation at Mount Hutt.
