Palm Cove in Australia’s tropical north Queensland is one of those places that you will always return to after you have been there. Palm Cove is located right on the Coral Sea midway between Cairns and Port Douglas. This region is one of Australia’s most popular holiday regions and has increasingly become an international destination. The holiday centre is along the esplanade which lines a coconut palm fringed coral sand beach. The resorts are almost all spread out along the esplanade although some have absolute beach frontage. The Esplanade itself is also full of cosy cafés and trendy restaurants and bars.
Cairns to the south is the main population centre of the region and it has an international and a domestic airport. You can fly in direct from all southern capitals as well as from many overseas destinations. Cairns is also the place to go for tours, many of which will pick up from your chosen holiday lodgings. Some of the must do tours include taking the Skyrail tour to Kuranda and back. The trip up is via cable car and the return by train via the bridge over the barron falls. This is quite spectacular especially in the wet season. The Daintree rainforest is also a must do tour. Here you will see pristine rainforest and if you are lucky, some of the regions magnificent wildlife. Another great tour will take you to Cooktown and return via Cape Tribulation. There are also many excellent tours to the Atherton Tablelands where you could visit the Undarra lava tubes or Lake Eacham and the Curtain Fig tree. There are also many others.
Tropical North Queensland is the home of the Australian dive industry with hundreds of charter boats on offer. You can choose from day tours right through to extended live aboard tours. The Great Barrier Reef lies just offshore and there is no better place in the world to pull on a mask and a pair of fins and get wet. Close to Cairns are a number of island resorts. Two are right on the reef. Green Island lies just offshore from Palm Cove and Lizard Island is a little further north. There are also terrific resorts on Fitzroy Island, Dunk Island and Bedarra Island.
