About this tour
Track platypuses along a creek in their natural Byron Bay habitat on this four-hour guided walk. You'll be collected from your accommodation and led on a gentle two-kilometre creek-side ramble by an environmental scientist, with the highest odds of spotting these shy monotremes in the early morning light. Expect to see one or two platypuses alongside birdlife, then settle in for a locally-sourced picnic breakfast by the water. If platypuses don't show, you get another go for free.
Highlights
- Watch platypuses feeding at dawn in creek habitat
- Two-kilometre easy walk, no strenuous climbing required
- Environmental scientist guide shares ecosystem knowledge
- Locally-sourced picnic breakfast by the creek
- Binoculars and photography access included
- Free return trip if no platypus sighting
What to expect
You'll be picked up before dawn and driven to a protected platypus zone outside Byron Bay. The walk follows a creek bed on easy terrain—no climbing or scrambling. Your guide will help you spot platypuses, which are elusive and move quietly; you're likely to see one or two, plus various waterbirds. Even without platypus sightings, the riparian landscape and wildlife commentary make the outing worthwhile. After an hour or so of searching, you'll stop for breakfast by the water's edge, then return to town by mid-morning.
Good to know
Early starts improve sighting odds considerably. Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes, and a jacket—creek-side mornings get cool. Platypus sightings aren't guaranteed, but the tour operator stands behind that with a free return visit if you miss out. Infant seats are available if needed.
