Explore the ancient rainforest of Far North Queensland with a guide who reads the landscape like a book. This 5-hour jaunt takes you into the Southern Daintree and down the Daintree River by boat to spot crocodiles, brolgas and other wildlife up close. You'll wade through Mossman Gorge's emerald pools and pick up morning tea and lunch along the way. Groups stay small—just 20 people—so you're not fighting for a decent vantage point.

What to expect

Your guide meets you at your hotel in the early morning and drives you north into the rainforest proper. The landscape shifts quickly—from coastal scrub to towering ferns and buttressed trees that haven't changed much in 135 million years. You'll board a boat on the Daintree River, where guides point out saltwater crocodiles basking on banks, brolgas wading in shallows, and the occasional turtle. Back on land, you'll walk into Mossman Gorge where granite boulders frame jade-coloured pools. The whole thing moves at a reasonable pace with stops for morning tea and a light lunch.

Good to know

Moderate fitness required—the gorge walk involves uneven terrain and some scrambling over rocks. Not suitable for children under 4 or anyone with mobility restrictions. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip and bring a hat. Drinks aren't included, so carry water. Tell the operator about any dietary needs when you book.
