About this tour
Head out into Cape Byron Marine Park on a 2.5-hour boat cruise during humpback migration season (June–November) to watch these enormous marine mammals pass the Byron Bay coastline. A marine biologist guides you from Ballina's Richmond River, explaining whale behaviour and ecosystem details whilst you listen to their underwater calls through a hydrophone. You'll drift through one of nature's longest migrations—over 2,500 kilometres—and potentially witness breaching and surface feeding up close.
Highlights
- Hydrophone picks up live humpback whale song underwater
- Marine biologist shares detailed knowledge of whales and habitat
- Witness migration of 2,500+ kilometres distance
- Breaching and feeding behaviour often visible
- Professional photos taken and shared with you
- Life jackets and waterproof ponchos provided
What to expect
You'll board at Ballina and head into the marine park where sightings are most likely. Conditions are variable—seas can be choppy during peak migration, so dress warmly and expect spray. The boat holds a mixed group and moves steadily to locate whales. When spotted, the captain slows approach and the biologist narrates behaviour and anatomy. Most trips see multiple whales, though no sightings are guaranteed. The hydrophone adds an intimate dimension, letting you hear their calls as they swim beneath the boat.
Good to know
Ballina wharf is separate from Byron Bay town; public transport connects them or arrange your own transfer. Not suitable if pregnant or recovering from spinal injury. Children under 5 shouldn't attend. Seasickness medication recommended for rough days. Bring a camera despite professional photos being supplied.
