About this tour
Combine two of North Queensland's most scenic transport experiences in a single loop. Park at Skyrail Smithfield, take a coach to Freshwater Station, then ride the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway through the Barron Gorge, spotting rainforest and waterfalls. Spend free time wandering Kuranda's village shops and cafés before ascending via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway with two canopy stops, finishing back at your car. Six-and-a-half hours, flexible timing depending on which train departure you choose.
Highlights
- Historic railway hugs Barron Gorge with waterfall views
- Skyrail glides above rainforest canopy with two mid-journey stops
- Self-paced exploration of Kuranda village between activities
- Reverse order option available (Skyrail first, train back)
- Fully accessible stations, carriages, and cable-car cabins
- No fixed meal times; choose your lunch spot in the village
What to expect
You'll drive yourself to Smithfield and hand over to a coach transfer to the train station. The scenic railway carriage climbs steadily alongside the gorge for roughly an hour, window seats essential for the cascading water and lush mountainsides. Kuranda village is compact—cluster of galleries, souvenir stands, and local eateries rather than a sprawling tourist hub. You'll have several hours to wander or sit with a coffee. The return trip via Skyrail cables you over the canopy at a leisurely pace; the two stops let you step out and absorb the treetop views before descending back to the terminal.
Good to know
Bring water and comfortable shoes for village walking. Book your specific train time in advance as slots fill quickly. Lunch isn't provided; budget café prices. The reverse itinerary (Skyrail down, train up) works equally well. All infrastructure is wheelchair and pram accessible.
