About this tour
Head out from Darling Harbour on a catamaran built for serious whale spotting. This 2.5-hour cruise cuts across Sydney Harbour in under 35 minutes to reach open water where southern right whales and humpbacks pass through seasonally. The vessel has two open decks for unobstructed sightings, and knowledgeable crew provide running commentary on behaviour and migration patterns. If whales don't show, you get a free return ticket to try again.

What to expect
You'll board at Aquarium Wharf and push out through the harbour quickly, spending most of the 2.5 hours in deeper water where the whales actually congregate. The catamaran sits low enough to see into the water but high enough to spot breaches and blowholes from a distance. Crew scan constantly and explain what you're seeing—migration timing, pod behaviour, why they're passing through. Bring a camera with a decent zoom; whales come close but not always predictably. The upper and lower decks mean you can move around to chase sightings or escape wind.
Good to know
Bring layers—ocean conditions are cooler than the city. If seas are rough, the boat still operates but viewing conditions may suffer. Prams and buggies are fine for infants. Not suitable if you have spinal injuries due to wave motion. Book ahead to secure your preferred departure time.
