About this tour

This 10-hour loop through the West MacDonnell Ranges delivers raw desert geology without the crowds. You'll drive past rust-coloured escarpments and stop at five key gorges and waterholes—Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, the Ochre Pits, Ormiston Gorge, and Ellery Creek Bighole—each offering different perspectives on the ranges. Morning tea and a bushman's lunch are supplied. The terrain is accessible for most fitness levels, though you'll need reasonable walking stamina and sturdy shoes.

What to expect

You'll be picked up from accommodation and driven west into the ranges, stopping at each site for 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Most stops involve short walks ranging from 10 to 30 minutes—nothing strenuous, but uneven ground and exposed sun are constant. Standley Chasm involves a narrow creek walk. Ormiston has a longer optional rim trail if you want it. In warmer months, Ellery Creek offers a swim in cool, clear water. Lunch is eaten in the field, usually at a shaded spot. The landscape shifts throughout the day as light angles change.

Good to know

You must buy an NT Parks Pass before the tour—it's no longer included. Bring hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottle, and sturdy walking shoes. Swimwear only matters November to April. A digital Parks Pass copy is acceptable. Gratuities are not included in the price.
